Moving is stressful and can be even more so for pets, who often don’t understand what is happening. With everything on your mind during a move, take the time to ensure your pets are safe and comfortable throughout the process. Here are some tips to help. Maintain a routine.
In the weeks/days before the move, your life and routines will probably change. However, pets tend to thrive on routines. They will surely pick up on your nervous energy so maintaining their schedule will keep them grounded and comfortable. Try to keep feeding times, walk times, and other routine activities consistent.
Make sure all their paperwork/vaccines/etc. are up to date.
For the move, make sure to have all the required paperwork and vaccines, especially if you are moving between Canada and another country. Also, keep their identification up-to-date with your new address and phone number in case anything happens.
Pack a bag with their essentials.
Before the movers arrive, make sure that you have set aside the items you will need for your pets during the move. Pack a bag with food, treats, beds, bowls, and favourite toys. These items will ensure that you can maintain a routine with your pets with familiar things during this stressful period.
On the day of the move, keep them away from the action.
When the movers come, lock your pets up in a quiet room. This ensures that they will remain calm but also out of the way, and you won’t risk having them run out in the middle of the moving chaos.
Gradually introduce them to your new home.
A new environment can be overwhelming for your pet. When you bring your pets to your new home, it might be beneficial for them to be introduced gradually to the space. Start by putting them in one room and then let them explore more and more of the home until they are familiar with it. Also, ensure that you pet-proof a room before your pets explore. Keep their items around.
In your new house, having your pets’ beds, toys, and blankets around will help make it feel like home to your pets. You might not be able to transport all your pets’ stuff with you on your flights but make sure to have at least a few objects they’ll recognize. It will help them feel comfortable in a new environment. Give them time.
A move is a MASSIVE change for your pets. It can take them time to adapt. They may act differently for some time, maybe hiding or acting more or less affectionately than usual. Give them time. Let them process this change at their own pace, and do not force them into situations that make them uncomfortable. Lastly, don’t worry! Pets are adaptable and will be comfortable again in no time!
